Broome is a Western Australian town with an Asian history making it not only incredibly interesting but unique in Australia.
Exempt from the White Australia Policy to service the pearling industry, Broome’s largely Asian population saw many businesses emerge in the 1930s as the town’s pearling industry thrived.
One business was the Ah Ming Store at 14 Carnarvon Street in Broome’s Chinatown.
Today Son Ming, a Chinese restaurant run by the Yu family - descendants of the original Ah Ming Store owners, occupies the site.
Son Ming has been a valued Phoenix Insurance Brokers client since 2014. A family museum located above the restaurant tells the stories of one of the founding families of Broome.
At Phoenix, we love to hear the rich histories behind our clients’ businesses.
Next time you’re in Broome, why not visit Son Ming and time permitting check out the museum above.
