The RAC recently published figures showing a doubling of insurance claims for weather damage in the last two years. The figures also showed Rockingham to be the storm damage capital of Western Australia with more than 90 insurance claims made in 2017.
Storms are the most common natural hazard in Australia and on average cause more damage than cyclones, earthquakes, floods and bush fires. While they’re unpredictable, there are steps you can take to fortify your home, car and family against them:
- Identify any potential risks in your front and back yards and minimise them as much as possible; items most commonly damaged include fences, gates, ceilings, roofs and patios
- Trim loose tree branches, hire a contractor to clear any trees surrounding power lines and secure loose outdoor objects like furniture
- Clean gutters and valley trays on your roof. This can save a lot of heartache in the event of a downpour
- Pump out some water from your swimming pool to help reduce the risk of overflow
No matter how much you prepare for stormy weather, damage to your property can still occur. Now is a good time to make sure your property is adequately covered in the event of a storm.
