Rockingham locals attend war memorial unveiling

Alex Dunbar from Phoenix Insurance Brokers' Rockingham office had the honour of escorting Australian navy veteran Mr Al Smith to a special ceremony at Christ Church Grammar School on Thursday 27 April for the unveiling of a bronze war memorial.

The memorial, created by sculptor Brad Jackson, was donated by the school’s Old Boys Association to coincide with Anzac Day.

Alex and Mr Smith have much in common – they are both Christ Church Grammar School old boys and they are Rockingham locals. Mr Smith attended the Claremont school in the sixties and Alex later in the eighties.

During his naval career, Mr Smith was based in Washington DC, at Bay City, Michigan (when HMAS Brisbane was built) and was also in Boston for her commissioning. He saw active service in Vietnam in 1969 on the Brisbane when the vessel shelled the enemy.

After the ceremony, Alex, who is a serving committee member of the Christ Church Old Boys Association, said “It was an honour to collect Mr Smith from his home in Rockingham and bring him to the ceremony which was attended by students, veterans and Royal Military College Duntroon commanding officer Ben Passmore, another Christ Church old boy.”
